1. Most of what you're spraying is alcohol

Every perfume is a mix of perfume oil and a carrier, usually alcohol. The name on the bottle tells you the ratio. An eau de toilette is typically around 5–15% perfume oil. An eau de parfum, the most common strength at the counter, is around 15–20%.

Put the other way round: in most bottles, four out of every five drops are alcohol. It makes the first spray feel bright and fresh, then evaporates within minutes and takes the lightest notes with it. The scent you smelled in the shop is mostly those first fifteen minutes.

So when a fragrance vanishes by lunch, it's usually not failing. It's doing exactly what it was built to do.

2. Longevity is mostly a question of oil

Perfume oil evaporates slowly. Alcohol evaporates fast. So the more oil in each spray, the longer there's something left on your skin to smell, and the more of the deeper notes survive into the afternoon.

3. The part that really is your skin

Skin does play a role, just a smaller one than people think. Fragrance holds on to moisture and oil, so dry skin lets it go faster. Three small habits help, whatever you wear:

  1. Spray after a shower

    On moisturised skin. An unscented lotion gives the perfume something to cling to.

  2. Aim for warm spots

    Neck, inner wrists, inside of the elbows. Warmth lifts the scent gradually through the day.

  3. Don't rub your wrists

    It heats and breaks up the top notes, so the opening burns off faster. Spray, and leave it.

These help. But no technique turns an eau de toilette into an all-day scent. There simply isn't enough oil to work with.

4. "But I still can't smell it on myself"

Here's the part almost nobody is told. Your brain tunes out smells that don't change. After twenty or thirty minutes with the same scent, your nose stops reporting it. Researchers call it olfactory adaptation; most people just call it nose blindness.
